Barrie Wells – Biodata

Originally from Liverpool, Barrie is a British entrepreneur and philanthropist, now residing in Lancaster. He is the grandson of former World Pole-Vault record holder and US Champion, Latimer Stones.
Barrie has a number of accolades to his name including an MBE awarded by the Queen for his philanthropy in 2020; a Points of Light Award from the Prime Minister in 2016; and an Honorary Doctorate. He was a Non-Executive Director for 10 years in the Marks & Spencer Group and has sat on many boards including AXA Insurance. He is also a Patron of Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

He won a scholarship in the 1970s to study insurance in the US which enabled him to spend up to a week at the home offices of 30 major insurance companies in America. Following this research in the US, he has had a fascinating career in insurance and philanthropy, the highlights including:
  1. Creating the first direct motor insurance operation in Asia, when he lived in Singapore for several years.
  2. Creating the first motor insurer in the UK which utilised lifestyle factors in pricing. This company was bought by AXA and became AXA Direct.
  3. Creating the UK's first direct commercial lines insurer to capitalise on the weaknesses in the traditional agency model. He sold his 51% share in this company to Allianz
  4. Creating and funding the Barrie Wells Trust which has had a range of charitable initiatives, including sponsoring over 20 Olympic and World Championship medal winning athletes across a variety of sports. This led onto his Athletes4Schools initiative where the sponsored athletes went into schools and delivered workshops to 35,000 children. However, his biggest initiative, Box4Kids, invites seriously ill children to VIP boxes at sporting and entertainment arenas. To date over 14,000 children and their family members have enjoyed a Box4Kids experience
  5. Public speaking on ‘Creative & Disruptive Entrepreneurship & Philanthropy’ at global events and leading universities worldwide. His presentation shares the philanthropic model he has created which pulls together, inspiring hundreds of high-net-worth individuals and companies to donate VIP boxes and motivating thousands of grassroots individuals to give time to nominate the children and manage the individual events. The presentation also highlights the immense joy he has obtained through his philanthropy which is why he plans to give his cash away in his own lifetime.
