Welcoming the IMBA delegation to the embassy, Ambassador Meighan reflected on a career that spans business, economic development, and diplomacy – a path deeply influenced by her academic and personal experience in Taiwan.
Ambassador Meighan began her academic journey studying Economics and Political Science at Santa Clara University in the United States, driven by a longstanding interest in international affairs. While diplomacy was always part of her vision, her early professional life took her into the world of business and economic development, a shift that ultimately led her to NCCU.
I’ve always been interested in the international arena,” she shared. “Nonetheless, I’ve found that when business is combined with strong international relations, it leads to tangible, measurable results—and that is what drives me.”
In 2003, she joined NCCU’s IMBA programme as part of one of the early cohorts of Belizean students under the ICDF scholarship programme. She highlighted the important role played by the Taiwanese Ambassador to Belize and ICDF - a key partner of NCCU - in encouraging her to take this step.
“At the time, I was hesitant,” she recalled. “I had just returned home and thought I needed more work experience before doing a master’s degree. But I was encouraged to take the opportunity, and looking back, I have no regrets.”
Arriving in Taiwan brought moments of adjustment, from the weather and language to everyday cultural differences. Yet these challenges quickly became part of what made the experience transformative.
“Coming to Taiwan was a shock at first,” she said. “But it opened my mind and broadened my horizons in ways I didn’t expect.”
What stood out most was the deeply international environment of the IMBA programme. Studying alongside Taiwanese students, ICDF scholars, and exchange students from across Europe, Latin America, and beyond, Ambassador Meighan found herself immersed in a truly global learning space.
“Because it was a different time, no smartphones, no video calls, the people around you became your family,” she reflected. “Some of my closest friends today are people I met through IMBA.”
After graduating, Ambassador Meighan returned to Belize with a strong sense of civic responsibility. Over the years, she built a diverse career spanning investment promotion at BELTRAIDE Belize, life insurance, wholesale and retail operations, business process outsourcing (BPO), and leadership roles at the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI).
Across these roles, she repeatedly drew on lessons from her IMBA experience particularly in relationship-building, negotiation, and cross-cultural communication.
“The IMBA experience taught me how to connect people and maintain relationships,” she explained. “That was essential in my work at the Chamber, and it’s something I know will continue to be valuable in diplomacy.”
When asked how it felt to return to Taiwan, this time as Belize’s Ambassador, her response was immediate.
“It felt easy,” she said. “It felt familiar.”
Having previously lived and studied in Taiwan, Ambassador Meighan noted that cultural familiarity has made her transition into diplomatic life smoother, particularly during engagements and negotiations.
During the meeting, Ambassador Meighan expressed strong interest in NCCU IMBA’s evolving curriculum, particularly its new Sustainability concentration. She highlighted the alignment between the programme and Belize’s national priorities, especially following the country’s landmark US$364 million Blue Bond for Ocean Conservation established in 2021.
“Belize has positioned itself globally around sustainability – both green and blue,” she noted. “The direction IMBA is taking aligns very naturally with where we are heading.”
Looking forward, Ambassador Meighan stressed her commitment to strengthening ties between Belize and NCCU, including helping to promote the IMBA programme to future Belizean students.
Reflecting on her own journey, Ambassador Meighan offered simple but powerful advice:
“Take the leap,” she said. “It’s the journey of a lifetime.”
“You never know where this experience might lead,” she added. “One day, you may find yourself representing your country and it all starts with taking that first step.”
